Should you ever trap a pigeon in a cage?
Trapping and removal is a common practice for people when it comes to nuisance animals, but when it comes to pigeons there is a big dilemma. First, it may not be legal to trap pigeons in your area, so you have to look into this first. Next trapping should only be done if you plan on killing the pigeons after. This sounds incredibly harsh; why can't they just be relocated? Well, pigeons have a homing ability. This means they can fly back to a particular destination even if they are driving miles and miles away. This homing ability is why pigeons were used for correspondence at one point in time, hence the common name of "carrier pigeon." While it would be far more PC to trap and relocate problem birds, trapping is only an option when lethal methods post-capture can be employed. That being said, excluding pigeons from your property can be fairly easy, and may even be relatively inexpensive, depending on your situation. Before you attempt to trap pigeons, look into one-way funnels, bird spikes, electric strips, and special netting.
